Intra Vascular Ultrasound (IVUS)
Advantages of Intra Vascular Ultrasound (IVUS):
- Gives a clearer picture of some conditions
- Can be used to diagnose issues or for treatment
- Provides answers for the possible causes of conditions that are otherwise unexplained
- Can identify blocked stents
- Minimal discomfort
The British Varicose Vein Centre is very proud to able to offer this procedure – as a diagnostic tool and as treatment. It is a highly specialised method that is only used by a handful of specialists in the UK.
With an intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), a probe on the end of a very thin catheter is passed up through the vein. Sound waves reflecting off of blood vessels are then measured and transformed into images to give a clear picture of what is happening in the vein. Duplex ultrasounds that are performed from outside the body only see the flow of blood and may not detect other issues.
As most people with venous conditions do not suffer from narrowing or blocking of the veins this may not always be required, but for some conditions it can give a clearer picture of what is wrong. It is particularly useful for some patients suffering from Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or the management of swollen leg.
